AI Is Changing Where People Shop. Delivery Decides Whether They Come Back.
What parcel shippers need to know about data, trust, and the fulfillment strategy behind the modern checkout. |
|
|
The shift reaches far beyond the website
Artificial intelligence is reshaping how consumers discover products, how they decide, and what they expect after they click buy. For retailers, that means better conversion, smarter personalization, and faster purchase decisions. However, the moment a customer hits checkout, the promise moves out of the browser and into the real world.
Therefore, the stakes for fulfillment rise alongside every AI upgrade. If a retailer earns trust online, delivery must protect that trust at the door. Today, shoppers expect speed, visibility, accuracy, and transparency. As a result, parcel strategy can no longer trail behind ecommerce technology. Instead, it has to keep pace with it. |
What the new survey actually found
Recently, Digital Commerce 360 and Bizrate Insights published findings in a report titled AI Spotlight: Optimizing Data for Agentic Commerce. The study surveyed 1,081 online shoppers during the first half of 2026. In short, two themes emerged. First, comfort with AI shopping tools is growing. Second, a clear gap remains between that comfort and shoppers’ understanding of how their data is handled.

Comfort with AI is no longer experimental
Notably, well over half of shoppers reported being at ease with how retailers use AI for recommendations, chatbots, and automated assistants. Specifically, 23.3% said they were very comfortable, while another 32.5% said they were somewhat comfortable. Consequently, AI has crossed an important line. For many consumers, it now feels like a normal part of shopping rather than a novelty.

Yet transparency tells a different story
Comfort with AI does not equal confidence in data practices. While the technology earns goodwill, the explanation behind it often does not. In fact, only 17.3% of shoppers said retailers were very clear about how their data is used. Another 29.3% described it as somewhat clear. As a result, the remaining respondents, roughly half, fell into the not very clear or not clear at all camp. Furthermore, that gap creates a strategic risk. A retailer can hold powerful AI tools, but weak trust can quietly suppress adoption.

The data shoppers worry about most
When asked which data raised the most concern, shoppers were specific. Payment and financial information topped the list. Location data followed closely. Personal details such as names and contact information ranked third. Importantly, these are not abstract categories. Each one sits at the center of how a package gets to a doorstep.

Why these concerns land on fulfillment
Here is the connection that retailers often miss. Shipping cannot happen without exactly the data that worries shoppers most. After all, a parcel needs a name, an address, a contact method, and sometimes a delivery preference. Therefore, the fulfillment layer is not separate from the trust conversation. On the contrary, it is part of it.
Consequently, parcel operations now sit inside the same trust equation that governs the storefront. A polished online experience can still collapse at the door. Moreover, a missed delivery, a vague tracking update, or a broken promise can undo every gain the AI made upstream. Ultimately, the strongest brands connect digital intent with physical execution. That means accurate promises, reliable transit, and clear communication at every step. |
What this means for parcel shippers
First, AI will increase pressure on parcel networks. As personalization sharpens, demand can shift faster by product, region, or customer segment. In turn, those swings change how volume flows through a network. Without clean forecasting, shippers face higher residential costs, peak surcharges, and inefficient service selection.
Second, weak data weakens leverage. Before any carrier negotiation, shippers need accurate parcel data to defend rates and service commitments. Otherwise, they bargain from a position of guesswork. Meanwhile, AI driven shopping raises service expectations. Customers who receive personalized buying experiences expect personalized delivery visibility to match.
Third, carrier strategy grows more important. A single carrier approach can introduce risk, while a weak agreement can cap both savings and service options. As a result, shippers need flexible routing, strong service level controls, and disciplined cost modeling to stay ahead. |
Five moves to make before volume patterns shift
Rather than waiting for AI to reshape demand, parcel shippers can prepare now. Accordingly, here are five practical steps.
1 |
Audit your parcel data first. Clean, structured data is the foundation for every decision that follows. |
2 |
Tighten address and contact accuracy. Because location data worries shoppers, precision protects both cost and confidence. |
3 |
Stress test your carrier mix. Build flexibility so demand spikes do not force costly default routing. |
4 |
Strengthen delivery visibility. Match personalized shopping with personalized tracking, exceptions, and promises. |
5 |
Model cost before you negotiate. Walk into carrier talks with benchmarks, not assumptions. |
|

How ebb Logistics can help
At ebb Logistics, we help parcel shippers turn data into better shipping decisions. Specifically, we analyze parcel spend, carrier performance, service mix, surcharge exposure, and contract terms. Then we pinpoint practical savings opportunities you can act on.
This matters even more as AI driven ecommerce changes demand patterns. Before making carrier decisions, shippers need clarity on where costs are rising and where service levels are falling short. In addition, our team supports contract negotiation, benchmarking, invoice auditing, and network optimization. Each service ties cost control directly to customer experience.
Above all, we do not treat parcel shipping as a back office function. Instead, we treat it as part of your ecommerce strategy. As retailers invest in AI, parcel operations must become more precise. That is exactly where ebb helps you protect margins while improving delivery performance. |
