New LTL Freight Class Rules Take Effect Today
Effective Date: July 19, 2025
What’s Changed
- The National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) system has shifted to a density-first approach.
- New 13-sub density scale replaces the former 11-tier system.
- Examples include:
- Sub 11: 30–<35 lb/ft³ — Class 60
- Sub 12: 35–<50 lb/ft³ — Class 55
- Sub 13: ≥50 lb/ft³ — Class 50
- Over 2,000 NMFC items revised or consolidated for greater clarity and simplicity.
Why It Matters
- More accurate pricing: Dense shipments are more cost-efficient; low-density freight will see higher charges.
- Clearer classification process: Simpler unless special handling or liability is involved.
- Reduced reclassifications: Fewer billing surprises, fewer disputes.
What Shippers Should Do
- Check NMFC updates: Use the new ClassIT+ system.
- Calculate density: Divide shipment weight by cubic volume (lb/ft³).
- Update internal tools: Ensure TMS, BOLs, and quoting systems reflect the new structure.
- Optimize packaging: Denser loads mean lower classification and costs.
- Train teams: Educate staff on measuring dimensions and using ClassIT+.
Bottom Line
The July 19, 2025 NMFC updates prioritize a streamlined, density-based freight classification system. While these changes aim to simplify pricing and reduce disputes, shippers must take action now—by measuring accurately, revising systems, and optimizing packaging—to stay competitive and cost-efficient.
