FedEx Adjust Dimensional Weight Policy – August 2025

Effective August 18, 2025, FedEx will implement a subtle yet impactful change to how it calculates dimensional (DIM) weight – a move that could quietly increase shipping costs for many businesses.

    Here’s what’s changing:
FedEx currently rounds package dimensions up only if they exceed a half-inch threshold. For example, a box measuring 10.5 inches would be rounded up to 11 inches. Under the new policy, any fraction of an inch will be automatically rounded up to the next whole inch, and this directly impacts the dimensional weight, which is then rounded up to the nearest pound.

    Why It Matters

On the surface, this may seem like a minor adjustment. But in reality, it’s part of a broader strategy by carriers to extract incremental revenue without drawing much attention. Over time, these seemingly small changes result in higher shipping charges, particularly for lightweight but bulky packages—common in e-commerce and retail fulfillment.

    This change will primarily impact:

    • Retailers and e-commerce brands shipping lightweight goods in larger boxes
    • 3PLs and fulfillment centers using standard packaging that may no longer be cost-efficient
    • Any shipper not actively auditing their DIM weights or optimizing box sizing

What Parcel Shippers Should Do Next

Shippers must take this change seriously and act now to avoid unnecessary cost increases:

    • Re-evaluate packaging: Eliminate excess air in boxes and right-size packaging to avoid rounding penalties.
    • Audit your dimensional data: Ensure your shipping software and scales accurately reflect package sizes down to the nearest fraction of an inch.
    • Run cost simulations: Compare pre- and post-change DIM weight charges to identify the financial impact.

At ebb Logistics, we specialize in helping shippers stay ahead of carrier changes like this one.

This isn’t just a billing update—it’s a margin squeeze. And shippers who ignore it may find their costs slowly eroding profits.

Let ebb Logistics help you understand the true cost of your shipping and uncover hidden savings before the changes take effect.
