ILA and USMX Resume Talks
The International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) will restart contract negotiations on January 7
While a tentative agreement on wages was reached in October 2024, other critical issues, notably the extent of port automation, remain unresolved.
The dockworkers’ contract expires on January 15, raising concerns of another strike similar to October’s three-day shutdown.
That strike ended with a tentative six-year, 62% pay increase under Biden administration pressure and a three-month contract extension to address unresolved issues, including automation
Talks stalled in November over plans to expand semi-automated machinery, opposed by the union.
In December, President-elect Donald Trump supported the dockworkers, criticizing automation and advocating for wage investment over machinery.
