    UPS 2025 Peak Demand Surcharges

UPS has released its updated Demand Surcharge schedule effective this fall and winter, outlining additional fees that will impact shippers during the busiest shipping weeks of the year. These surcharges—commonly known as Peak Surcharges—apply across a wide range of services, including Ground, Air, and Large Packages, and are designed to offset the operational challenges of heightened seasonal demand.

    Key Highlights

    1. Surcharges on Oversized and Heavy Packages

From September 28, 2025 through January 17, 2026, UPS will apply surcharges on packages requiring Additional Handling, Large Packages, and shipments that exceed maximum limits:

    • Additional Handling: $8.25 → $10.80 per package (depending on period)
    • Large Package: $90.50 → $107.00 per package
    • Over Maximum Limits: $485 → $540 per package

    2. Ground and Air Package Surcharges

Between October 26, 2025 and January 17, 2026, UPS will add surcharges on most residential and air shipments:

    • Ground Residential & Ground Saver: $0.40 → $0.60 per package
    • UPS Next Day Air & Other Air Services: $1.10 → $2.05 per package

    3. Higher Volume Shipper Tables

For shippers billed more than 20,000 packages per week (after October 2024), UPS will apply tiered surcharges based on weekly package volume compared to a defined Baseline (June 2025).

For example, during the Nov 23–Dec 27, 2025 peak window:

    • Ground Residential / Ground Saver: $0.60 at baseline volume → up to $7.50 per package if volumes exceed 400% of baseline
    • Next Day Air Residential & Other Air Residential: $2.05 at baseline volume → up to $8.75 per package at highest tiers
    • Commercial Air services: remain steady at $2.05 per package

This structure means large e-commerce shippers could see significantly higher surcharges if their holiday demand spikes well above baseline averages.

    What This Means for Shippers

    • Budget for higher costs: Especially on large or irregular packages, which can cost hundreds in added fees.
    • Track volumes closely: Higher volume shippers face steep escalations if they exceed baseline thresholds.
    • Plan ahead: With surcharges starting late September, businesses should adjust pricing strategies, fulfillment models, and customer shipping offers well before the holiday surge.

    Final Thoughts

UPS’s updated surcharge schedule underscores the ongoing challenge of balancing e-commerce growth with network capacity. Shippers—especially high-volume retailers—should expect higher per-package costs and prepare accordingly.

To stay ahead, companies may want to evaluate alternative carriers, optimize package sizes and weights, and explore hybrid fulfillment strategies to minimize exposure to peak charges.
