Globalization Too Big to Fail Despite Rising Tariffs

In the face of increasing tariffs and changing customs regulations, DHL Express Asia Pacific CEO Ken Lee emphasized that globalization is not only intact but evolving. Despite short-term trade disruptions, businesses are actively adjusting to maintain international connectivity and supply chain resilience.

    Global Trade Resilience

According to DHL’s Trade Atlas 2025, global goods trade is expected to grow at an average annual rate of 3.1% from 2024 to 2029. This growth trajectory outpaces the previous decade and reflects the enduring importance of cross-border commerce—even amidst shifting economic policies.

    Tariffs and U.S. Regulatory Shifts

In April 2025, DHL temporarily halted shipments over $800 to U.S. customers after customs authorities lowered the de minimis threshold for formal entry processing from $2,500 to $800. This policy change significantly increased paperwork and processing time for international deliveries, particularly affecting e-commerce transactions. (The Verge)

U.S. shoppers have also reported unexpected customs fees on international orders due to stricter enforcement and tariff collection. Carriers such as DHL and UPS are now required to collect these duties at the point of delivery. (The Washington Post)

    Looking Ahead

Despite these challenges, DHL leadership remains confident in the strength and necessity of globalization. Ken Lee affirmed in a Wall Street Journal interview that the flow of global goods is too vital to collapse under tariff pressure. Instead, logistics providers and businesses are innovating and adjusting their operations to meet new realities.

Bottom Line: Tariff threats are real, but the global economy is adapting, not retreating. DHL and other major logistics firms are leading the charge in building resilient, future-ready trade networks.
