UPS and FedEx additional handling and oversize calculator
Enter a package’s dimensions, weight and packaging to see whether it triggers a UPS or FedEx additional handling, oversize or large package charge in 2026, which measurement did it, the published amount by zone, and how far the box is from the next threshold.

| Measurement | This package | Additional handling over | Oversize over | Unauthorized over | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Longest side | 50 in | 48 in | 96 in | 108 in | over over additional handling by 2 in, 46 in under oversize |
| Second-longest side | 16 in | 30 in | n/a | n/a | 14 in under additional handling |
| Length plus girth | 114 in | 105 in | 130 in | 165 in | over over additional handling by 9 in, 16 in under oversize |
| Cubic volume | 12,800 cu in | 10,368 cu in | 17,280 cu in | n/a | over over additional handling by 2,432 cu in, 4,480 cu in under oversize |
| Actual weight | 30 lb | 50 lb | 110 lb | 150 lb | 20 lb under additional handling |
| Packaging | Corrugated box | corrugated, no packaging charge | |||
To avoid the additional handling charge, every one of these has to come back under its limit: longest side by 2 in, length plus girth by 9 in and cubic volume by 2,432 cu in. The nearest threshold not yet crossed is length plus girth: 16 in short of the 130 in oversize limit. Both carriers bill one of these charges per package, not several: the over-maximum charge if the package is unauthorized, otherwise the oversize or large package charge, otherwise one additional handling charge (UPS in the order weight, length plus girth, length, width, cubic size, packaging; FedEx the highest of the three). Dimension-triggered additional handling carries a 40 lb minimum billable weight and oversize a 90 lb minimum, which on a light box costs more than the surcharge. Fuel is charged on top of every amount shown. Amounts are the published 2026 rates for zones 5 to 6, before any discount in your agreement.

What triggers a UPS or FedEx additional handling or oversize charge?
A FedEx additional handling surcharge or a UPS additional handling charge applies in 2026 when a package measures more than 48 inches on its longest side, more than 30 inches on its second-longest side, more than 105 inches in length plus girth or more than 10,368 cubic inches, weighs more than 50 pounds, or is not in a corrugated box. The FedEx oversize charge and the UPS large package surcharge apply over 96 inches long, 130 inches in length plus girth, 17,280 cubic inches or 110 pounds. Over 108 inches, 165 inches in length plus girth or 150 pounds the package is unauthorized and billed $1,875. Each carrier bills one charge per package, the highest that applies, and dimension-triggered charges carry a minimum billable weight: 40 pounds for additional handling, 90 for oversize. Length plus girth is the longest side plus twice the width plus twice the height.
Worked example
A 50 by 16 by 16 inch corrugated box weighing 30 lb, shipped commercial to zone 5, is 12,800 cubic inches and 114 inches in length plus girth. Its longest side is over 48 inches, its length plus girth over 105 and its cubic volume over 10,368, so both carriers bill a dimension additional handling charge of $38.50 at zone 5, one charge each, not three. The 40 lb minimum billable weight does not matter here because dimensional weight is already 93 lb, which is what the box is rated at. It is 16 inches of length plus girth short of the oversize threshold, where the charge would be $320 at FedEx or $273 commercial at UPS and the minimum billable weight 90 lb.
Published rates, not your agreement
The checker applies the published 2026 criteria, amounts and precedence for U.S. domestic packages at the zone selected, and the demand add-on only when a ship date falls in the published season. It does not apply the discounts or waivers in your agreement, the international criteria, Ground Economy or SurePost rules, or the carriers’ discretion to assess handling on packages that need it. Carriers measure packages themselves, and a box that compresses or bulges in transit can be rebilled.
